Working Abroad?
Risks and Foreign Liability

When OSU employees work or travel abroad, the State purchases International Voluntary Workers' Compensation which provides complimentary Executive Travel Assistance Coverage through Ace Insurance.

NOTE: THE STATE’S EXECUTIVE TRAVEL ASSISTANCE COVERAGE WAS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED ON MAY 1, 2009; THEREFORE, THE OSU OFFICE OF RISK MANAGEMENT IS OFFERING ACCESS TO A SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE POLICY FOR BOTH BUSINESS AND PLEASURE TRAVEL THAT PROVIDES ADDITIONAL COVERAGE AND BENEFITS. A summary of those benefits are outlined below.

PRIOR to travel outside the U.S. and Canada, all OSU employees should:

  1. Consult the U.S. Foreign Travel Advisory and Warnings and review any public announcements and country sanctions. If the country of travel has warnings, notify the OSU Office of Risk Management to confirm coverage with Ace Insurance.
  2. Register your trip with the OSU Office of Risk Management to receive your Ace Europe Assistance Travel Card for contact information on the complimentary Executive Travel Assistance Coverage.
  3. Notify the American Consulate. During a disaster overseas, American consular officers can assist in evacuation were that to become necessary if they know a person’s location.
  4. Obtain any required immunizations and required documents for the country of travel. Student Health Services may be able to help you with your required immunizations and offers a travel clinic for additional information.
  5. Review the SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE POLICY for additional Travel Assistance Coverage including Emergency Evacuation for both medical and political unrest, and natural disaster emergencies.

NOTE: If driving a vehicle while abroad, purchase the insurance options available for the vehicle.

When OSU students travel abroad, OSU does NOT provide liability coverage for the student; therefore, health insurance is required and available through International Programs.

Coverage and Countries of Travel

International Foreign Voluntary Workers' Compensation applies to domestic employees traveling worldwide outside the US and Canada and applies to foreign based employees traveling worldwide including travel to the US and Canada on state business.

Pre-approved countries for OSU travel are updated annually. To ensure you are covered during your trip and/or to add a new country of travel, please notify the Office of Risk Management. Countries listed on the U.S. Foreign Travel Advisory and Warnings may need special approval. Sanctioned countries are NOT covered.
